Where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, triggering World War I. A tiny spot with enormous historical weight. Museum attached. Every Sarajevo visitor must know this story.

Personal objects and video testimonies from children who survived the 1992–95 siege. One of the most acclaimed small museums in Europe. Moving and essential for understanding this city.

Named for FK Sarajevo legend Asim Ferhatović — the man your stadium honours. Excellent chicken ćevapčići and fresh salads. A pilgrimage for new players connecting to club history.

Traditional Bosnian cafeteria eateries serving daily home-cooked food. Soups, stews, grilled meats. No menus — ask what's available. You'll eat like a local for under 10 BAM. The cheapest quality food in Sarajevo.
💡 Look for the word "Aščinica" above the door
Unknown to tourists but beloved by Sarajevo residents. Bosnian chain with immense supermarket, pharmacy, ATMs, and a cafe. Exceptionally well-stocked at genuinely local prices. Don't overlook this one.

The biggest Mercator in Sarajevo's western zone. Excellent for bulk shopping — grocery, household, clothing. Guarded underground parking. Very popular with local families.

The actual tunnel used to smuggle food and supplies under the airport runway during the 1992–95 siege. A lifeline for a besieged city of 350,000. The most powerful and moving site in Sarajevo. Non-negotiable visit.

A spa town municipality on the western edge of Sarajevo. Home to Vrelo Bosne — the stunning spring source of the Bosna River — set in forest parks with horse-drawn carriage rides. Perfect for recovery walks, mental reset days between matches, and bringing visiting family.
Multiple restaurants line the Vrelo Bosne park. Grilled meats, fresh trout, and traditional Bosnian food beside the crystal-clear river source. Extremely popular on weekends. Great for a long, relaxed team lunch.

The name means "Little Paradise" — and it earns it. Traditional Bosnian specialties in a beautiful natural setting. Worth the drive. Consistently recommended by locals as one of the best day-trip restaurants.

Well-stocked Bingo serving the Ilidža community. Good for bulk shopping if you live in this area. Pharmacy counter inside. Friendly neighbourhood atmosphere.

Crystal-clear spring source of the Bosna River wrapped in ancient forest. Horse-drawn carriage rides, walking paths, swans, and riverside restaurants. One of the most beautiful natural spots in the Balkans. Free. Unmissable.

Take the gondola up Trebević for panoramic views of Sarajevo. The abandoned 1984 Winter Olympics bobsled track — now covered in graffiti and reclaimed by nature — is one of the most unique sights in all of Europe.

Practical Onboarding
Bosnia uses the Bosnian Mark (BAM/KM). Fixed rate: 1 EUR = 1.955 BAM. Many local restaurants and shops are cash-only. Exchange offices (mjenjačnica) are everywhere with minimal commission. Always carry cash.
Trams connect the full east-west axis cheaply and reliably. Bolt (taxi app) is available and affordable. The city is very walkable in the central corridor along the Miljacka River. Uber coverage is limited.
Official language is Bosnian (closely related to Serbian and Croatian). Most younger locals and professionals speak solid English. Learning basics — Hvala (thank you), Molim (please), Dobar dan (good day) — wins enormous goodwill.
Bosnian cuisine is hearty and meat-heavy. Ćevapi, burek, klepe, and dolma are essential. Bosnian coffee is served thick and loose — wait for the grounds to settle before drinking. Tipping ~10% is appreciated but not mandatory.
FK Sarajevo vs FK Željezničar is the Vječiti Derbi — Eternal Derby. One of the most passionate derbies in the Balkans. You are Bordo-Bijeli now. Understand the history, feel the weight of it. Your club has the larger fanbase and the longer trophy shelf.
Named for legendary striker Asim Ferhatović who died suddenly in 1987. 34,500 capacity. Bosnia's largest stadium. When it's full for a derby, it is truly electric. Respect the name every time you step on that pitch.
Three main carriers: BH Telecom (best overall coverage), m:tel, and HT Eronet. Prepaid SIM cards are cheap and available at any carrier shop or kiosk. Get one on your first day. EU roaming rules apply for European players.
Contact club medical staff first for all training or match injuries. For personal health: KCU Sarajevo (Clinical Centre University) is the main hospital. Pharmacies (apoteke) marked by green cross signs are widely available across all areas.
Sarajevo sits in a valley at 500m elevation — winters are cold and snowy (−5°C to 5°C), summers are warm and pleasant (25–30°C). Spring and autumn are mild. Pack layers. The city is stunning in snow but the roads get icy — factor that into travel time.
ATMs (bankomati) are widely available across all areas. Major banks include UniCredit, Raiffeisen, and Sparkasse — all have English-language ATMs. Notify your home bank before arrival to avoid card blocks. Exchange offices offer better rates than airport kiosks.
Sarajevo International Airport (SJJ) is 12km from the city centre — about 20 minutes by taxi. Direct flights to major European hubs: Vienna, Istanbul, Frankfurt, Zürich, London. Bolt or a metered taxi from the stand — avoid unmarked cabs outside the terminal.
Sarajevo is a deeply proud city with a complex recent history. The 1992–95 siege is living memory for most adults. Show curiosity and respect — locals will reward you with extraordinary hospitality. You are a guest in one of Europe's most resilient cities.
